The Ginetta story

Ginetta’s Akula is a road-car programme from a company strongly associated with specialist competition machinery. Its front-engined proportions and deliberately visible aerodynamic treatment give it a different starting point from many mid-engined hypercars. The production specification matters more than repeating every figure attached to the earlier reveal.

The appeal is the possibility of a road car conceived with an unusually clear circuit vocabulary. That also creates questions about visibility, noise, access and the balance between road and track use. We would judge those compromises as part of the car’s character rather than assume that racing associations automatically make every road-car decision better.

Akula’s front-engined layout is worth considering on its own merits. It offers a different set of proportions and packaging choices from the compact central cabin of many mid-engined rivals. We would not treat that difference as a disadvantage by definition. A supercar is more interesting when its layout supports a deliberate set of priorities than when it follows a fashionable configuration simply because that is what its competitors use.

Current lineup & programmes

Performance and specialist model families are listed below. Programme status describes the manufacturer’s published range or announcement, rather than stock or an available allocation. Open-top and special derivatives are grouped where they share a family; follow the model link for the distinctions.

Past models

Past performance-car families relevant to our 1996–2026 archive. A surviving product page or conversion catalogue does not mean the original donor car remains in production.

This is a young programme without a separate completed road-model generation in our thirty-year archive. The current family and its development history are the starting point.

The SuperCarNews view

Ginetta's production Akula is a carbon-structure road-car programme with a naturally aspirated 6.4-litre V8. The current manufacturer page quotes 600 bhp and gives the car a broad road-and-track brief. Those details should take precedence over figures attached to earlier show versions.

What interests us is the move from competition manufacturing into a road car expected to provide a more complete ownership experience. Cabin finish, everyday control operation and long-distance use become important alongside the capabilities that a racing organisation already understands. The most convincing result would make those elements feel designed together rather than added as an afterthought.
