For example, Audi service literature uses 8K-prefixed sales codes for the 2009 A4.[3] “B8” is convenient generation shorthand, not the repair identity.

Parts research may begin with broad categories such as brake discs or filters, but it cannot claim universal fitment. A listing that says “fits Audi A4” has skipped the decisive information.

1. Copy the 17-character VIN from the car and documents. 2. Record Audi type, build date, engine code, gearbox code and all legible PR codes. 3. Online VIN decoders may infer equipment or omit market-specific options. They can help with orientation, but they are secondary to manufacturer records and physical identifiers.
Handling mismatches
A mismatch is not automatically evidence of wrongdoing. An engine, gearbox, brake package or suspension assembly may have been replaced legitimately. It still needs an explanation.
- Check whether the difference is a documented supersession or replacement.
- Ask for part numbers, invoices and the workshop responsible.
- Verify that registration records reflect any required engine-number change.
- Confirm that safety-related replacements meet the exact specification.
- Refer suspected identifier tampering to an appropriate professional or authority.
Never alter or re-stamp identifiers. Do not grind or aggressively clean a number to make it “readable”. Use model-specific workshop information to locate physical codes safely.
Quattro needs context
Audi documents different quattro systems and technical milestones across longitudinal-engine and other platforms.[5] The badge does not name one invariant piece of hardware. Platform architecture, engine orientation, gearbox and build data determine the relevant system and procedure.
A drivetrain diagnosis based only on the word quattro is incomplete. The same applies to fluid selection and service parts.
