Parts language becomes slippery when a label is treated as a quality grade. Genuine, OE and OEM describe relationships between a vehicle maker, a component maker and a sales channel, but usage is not perfectly consistent across the industry. Aftermarket covers an even wider field. None of these words, by itself, proves that a component fits your car or suits the job.
This glossary gives each term a practical working meaning. Check the wording used by the actual seller and manufacturer, then verify the part number, specification and vehicle application. If a listing relies on a broad phrase such as "OEM quality" without naming the maker or evidence behind the claim, treat it as marketing rather than identification.
Genuine
A genuine part is sold in the vehicle manufacturer's branded supply chain and packaging. It normally carries the vehicle maker's part number and branding, even where another company manufactured the component.
Genuine can simplify a conversation with a dealer parts department and may be the clearest route where software, coding, trim finish, supersessions or manufacturer support matter. It does not mean the vehicle manufacturer physically made every item. It also does not remove the need to check the VIN, option code, build date and current part-number information.
Ask:
- Is the number current, or has it been superseded?
- Does the application depend on engine, transmission, brakes, suspension or market equipment?
- Is coding, calibration or installation by an authorised or specialist workshop required?
- What warranty terms and proof of purchase apply?
OE: original equipment
OE usually means a part or component supplied as original equipment when the vehicle was built. The term can refer to the component itself or to a company that supplied parts to a vehicle manufacturer.
A brand may have supplied one component for one model, production period or factory without supplying every version of that component. Being an OE supplier somewhere in the industry does not establish that a particular boxed part is the same as the one fitted to your exact car. Design revisions, production locations, specifications and quality-control arrangements can differ.
When a seller calls a product OE, ask what supports the claim for that specific part number and application. A named manufacturer, cross-reference and catalogue application are more useful than a general statement about the brand.
OEM: original equipment manufacturer
OEM means original equipment manufacturer. In ordinary parts retail it is often used for a company that manufactures components for vehicle makers, or for a product sold under that company's own brand rather than the vehicle badge.
The difficult word is "often". Sellers use OEM in different ways, and phrases such as "OEM standard", "OEM spec" or "OEM equivalent" may describe an asserted level of compatibility rather than the identity of the original supplier. Read the full claim. If the manufacturer and evidence are not stated, the acronym alone adds little.
An OEM-branded replacement can be a sensible option when its application is confirmed and the supplier is traceable. It is not automatically identical to a genuine boxed part. Compare the exact part number, revision, physical specification, included hardware, warranty and catalogue notes.
OE-matching or equivalent-quality parts
These expressions usually claim that a replacement is made to match an original equipment specification or performance level. They do not necessarily mean the part came from the original supplier or the vehicle maker's channel.
The useful questions concern the standard being matched, who makes the claim and what documentation supports it. Dimensions alone may not capture material, electrical, filtration, friction, durability or software requirements. For a safety-critical or technically sensitive component, involve a qualified workshop and use authoritative application data.
Aftermarket
An aftermarket part is sold outside the vehicle manufacturer's genuine-parts channel for replacement, repair or modification. The category includes established specialist manufacturers, economy service items, upgraded components, motorsport products and poorly documented stock. The word does not indicate one level of quality.
Choose within the aftermarket by looking at the maker, application data, technical specification, traceability, warranty, local support and intended use. A performance-oriented part can introduce noise, stiffness, heat behaviour, accelerated wear elsewhere or legal and insurance questions. An inexpensive routine item can be perfectly adequate when it meets the correct specification. The category name cannot settle either choice for you.
Remanufactured
A remanufactured part is a used core that has been disassembled, inspected and rebuilt through a defined process, with worn or unsuitable elements replaced as required by that process. This differs from a used part sold as removed and from an item given only a basic clean or repair.
Standards vary, so ask who performed the work, what the process includes, how the unit is tested, whether updates are incorporated and what warranty applies. Some sellers require a refundable core deposit and the return of your old unit. Confirm packaging, fluid-draining and return deadlines before installation.
Reconditioned, rebuilt and refurbished
These terms may describe anything from a detailed overhaul to limited repair and cosmetic cleaning. They are not interchangeable unless the seller defines them that way. Request a written scope: components replaced, measurements or tests completed, tolerances used, identity of the rebuilder and warranty conditions.
For expensive assemblies, keep serial numbers, test documents and photographs. Ask how a warranty claim would be handled if removal and refitting labour is substantial.
Used, recycled or salvaged
A used part has had a previous service life. It may be suitable for some trim, body or obsolete components when its identity and condition can be assessed. Other categories carry safety, wear, coding, contamination or legal concerns that make a used item unsuitable or a matter for specialist advice.
Check donor-vehicle information, matching numbers, damage, corrosion, storage, return rights and whether the part is locked or coded to another vehicle. Do not assume a low-kilometre claim applies to the component without evidence.
Service kit
A service kit groups parts intended for a maintenance task. It may save time, but the word "kit" does not guarantee that every included item applies to every variant or that the package contains everything required by the vehicle's schedule.
Verify each component and quantity. Check whether seals, one-time-use fasteners, fluids, filters, sensors or ancillary items differ by engine, transmission, build date or option. The workshop performing the job should settle the final list.
Supersession and interchange
A supersession occurs when a manufacturer replaces an earlier part number with a later one. An interchange or cross-reference suggests that one number corresponds with another catalogue or brand. Both are useful research paths, not permission to order without checking conditions.
A supersession may require associated parts, revised software, a complete set, a production break or an installation instruction. A cross-reference can contain errors or omit variant detail. Preserve the number from the car, the number from authoritative catalogue data and the proposed replacement number as three separate pieces of evidence.
Fitment is a method, not a label
Before ordering, record:
1. VIN, build date and market or delivery status. 2. Exact model, body, engine and transmission identifiers. 3. Relevant option or equipment codes, especially brakes and suspension. 4. The number and markings on the removed part where safely accessible. 5. The current candidate part number, supersessions and catalogue notes. 6. Dimensions, connectors, specification and included hardware where relevant. 7. Who confirmed the application, when it was checked and what evidence was used.
Do not infer fitment from a page about a chassis family or from a reported symptom. Similar cars can use different components, and a fault must be diagnosed before a replacement is selected. For brakes, steering, suspension, airbags, fuel systems, high-voltage equipment, coding or work beneath a raised vehicle, use a qualified professional.
Fitment methodology and accountability
